Wi-Fi speeds in South Africa – iPhone vs Android

MyBroadband's free Speed Test App for Android and iOS gives smartphone users the ability to test their mobile and Wi-Fi connection speeds at home, work, or out and about.

The Speed Test App is ad-free and allows users to test the download speed, upload speed, and latency of their Internet connection.

The app also provides a map of where users conduct their tests, and makes it possible to record and export the test results.

The MyBroadband Speed Test App has been installed by over 15,000 users, who conduct tens of thousands of tests each month.

A number of these tests are conducted over Wi-Fi connections, which provides an overview of the home and work Internet speeds users have access to.

Android vs iOS

The September 2017 results show that iOS users enjoy higher average Wi-Fi speeds, with lower latency, compared to Android users.

With iPhones and iPads generally more expensive than Android devices, it can be assumed that iPhone users typically have access to more expensive – and faster – Internet connections.

The table below provides an overview of the Wi-Fi speed test results.

Android vs iOS
Average download speed over Wi-Fi16.925Mbps8.937Mbps
Average upload speed over Wi-Fi12.020Mbps5.206Mbps
Average latency over Wi-Fi 62ms91ms
