Volvo’s Polestar 1 – 440kW and 1,000Nm

Polestar – a Volvo brand – has unveiled the Polestar 1, which is set to roll out in mid-2019.

The Polestar 1 forms part of the carmaker's plans to become a standalone electric performance brand.

Polestar also confirmed plans for its first three models, a production facility in China, and a "customer-focused route to market".

The Polestar 1 is a two-door, 2+2 seat Grand Tourer Coupé with an "Electric Performance Hybrid" drivetrain.

As an electric car supported by an internal combustion engine, it has a range of 150km on electric power alone.

Its output of 440kW and 1,000Nm of torque places the car firmly in the performance segment. A carbon fibre body reduces weight and improves stiffness, as well as lowers the car's centre of gravity.

The Polestar 1 will be built in the Polestar Production Centre in China, which is currently under construction and due for completion in mid-2018.

Cars will be ordered online and offered on a two or three-year subscription basis.

The order books for the Polestar 1 open on 17 October.
