Steam has published its Hardware Survey for September 2017, detailing the most popular components used by PC gamers on the platform.
To see how much the "average" gaming PC on Steam costs, we took the local pricing of the components and built a rig – as detailed below.
Popular Hardware
The data showed the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 was the most popular graphics card, but did not differentiate between the 3GB and 6GB models.
As the most common amount of VRAM is 2GB, we included the 3GB model of the card in the list.
Quad-core processors with a clock speed between 3.3GHz and 3.7GHz were the most popular among Steam users.
The recently-unveiled Intel Core i3-8100 desktop processor offers these specifications at a cheaper price than comparable previous-generation chips – with four physical cores and a base clock speed of 3.6GHz.
However, these new chips are only compatible with 300-series motherboards, of which the high-end Z370 chipset is currently the only versioin available.
As B360 motherboards become available, the price of this build is expected to drop substantially.
It must be noted that power supplies, motherboards, and cases are not measured by the Steam Hardware Survey, and compatible models were included to provide a pricing overview of a functional PC.
Component | Price |
---|---|
Intel Core i3-8100 | R1,899 |
ASRock Z370 Pro4 Motherboard | R2,240 |
Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB DDR4 | R1,299 |
Palit GeForce GTX 1060 3GB StormX | R3,299 |
WD Blue 1TB Hard Drive | R659 |
Raidmax 500W PSU | R423 |
Raidmax Vortex V4 Chassis | R464 |
Total Price | R10,463 |
Peripherals
The Steam survey also records data on popular peripherals.
The most popular primary monitor resolution was Full HD (1,920 x 1,080), with the most common multi-monitor desktop resolution 3,840 x 1,080 – indicating a FHD dual-monitor setup.
Additionally, 99.1% of Steam users had a functional microphone installed on their system, while the most popular virtual reality headset was the HTC Vive – closely followed by the Oculus Rift.
Both Intel and Nvidia continued to take market share from their competitors in the CPU and GPU categories respectively.
