With each new version of iOS released or new iPhone launched, the claim that Apple is intentionally slowing down old devices resurfaces.
The theory behind the statement is that Apple makes its older iPhones slower and less responsive so users upgrade to a new Apple device.
The claim surfaced once again following the launch of the iPhone 8 and iOS 11, but Futuremark has proven that the allegations are unfounded.
It referenced GPU and CPU tests using iPhone 5s, 6, 6s, and 7 smartphones, mapping their performance over time.
"Since 2016, we have collected more than a hundred thousand benchmark results for seven iPhone models across three versions of iOS," said Futuremark.
"There are no signs of a conspiracy."
The tests use data from 3DMark, which analyses the devices' CPU and GPU performance.
"Apple actually does a good job of supporting its older devices with regular updates that maintain a consistent level of performance across iOS versions."
It added that a reason for a smartphone slowing down when a new OS is released is that new features are more demanding in terms of processing power – putting strain on the device.
