Mediacom Expands Gigabit Speeds to 1250 Markets -

Mediacom continues to expand deployment of gigabit broadband service, and now says the company offers the ultra-fast speeds in more than 1,250 communities. A company announcement indicates that Mediacom has pushed gigabit connectivity into 27 additional markets across Delaware, Maryland and Michigan. Mediacom calls these gigabit upgrades its "Gigasphere" initiative, and says it will ultimately deploy the ultra-fast service to 3 million homes and businesses within its 22 state footprint.

In most of these markets, 1 Gbps down, 50 Mbps up service with a 6 TB usage cap will cost $140 per month, while a 500 Mbps down, 30 Mbps up service with a 4 TB usage cap will cost users $120 per month.

These markets are also seeing the introduction of a 500 Mbps tier, and the company is quick to indicate the DOCSIS 3.1 technology will pave the way for multi-gigabit speeds, eventually.

"In addition to enhancing speeds for residential and small business customers today, the Gigasphere platform we have deployed also lays the groundwork for offering multi-Gig services in the future," says company CTO JR Walden. "This next generation technology is an excellent complement to the Gigabit+ Fiber SolutionsTM that Mediacom Business has been offering local businesses in our markets for many years."
