A Better Name For White Box Switches: Survey Snapshot

A few weeks ago, tech blogger Eyvonne Sharp took to Twitter to propose that the tech industry needs a better name for white box switches.

Her concern was that "white box" sounds too much like a garage experiment rather than a production platform, which might discourage investment and adoption.

I thought her idea was perfect for the surveys we run in Human Infrastructure, and Eyvonne was gracious enough to let me use it.

Here's the results based on my name suggestions. Feel free to chime in with your own ideas.

And here's how the results break out by percentages:

  • Choose your own adventure: 30.4%
  • Vanilla flavor: 21.7%
  • Hardware in the nude: 17.4%
  • Be not afraid: 17.4%
  • Other: 13%

Thanks to everyone who responded. If you want to play along with future Survey Snapshots, subscribe to Human Infrastructure Magazine. It's free and we won't sell you out to spammers, vendors, or charming grifters.
